A study reported by researchers from the University
of Louisiana in
Monroe indicates antioxidants can help women retain
healthy breasts.
The study focused on palm tocotrienols, an antioxidant
in the vitamin E
family. The research suggests the compound may help
reduce the risk of
breast cancer. Tocotrienols are super antioxidants
thought to be a
chemopreventive agent that may inhibit the growth of
breast cancer
cells.
When used with Tamoxifen, palm tocotrienols
were found to
increase the drug's effectiveness as a treatment for
breast cancer.
"Women need to take the necessary steps to treat or
prevent breast
cancer, even at an early age," said Dr. Paul Sylvestor
of the
Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences in the
College of Pharmacy.
"Women have so many factors: age, gender and genetics
working against
them to increase their chances of developing breast
cancer. Every woman
should consider taking a supplement to prepare her
body to fight it."
