BACTERIA FIGHT BACK AGAINST PINE CLEANERS
Bacteria that become resistant to household pine oil cleaners also might be resistant to antibiotics.
Researchers from Midwestern University in Illinois, Curtin University of Technology in Australia, and Illinois State University write in Applied and Environmental Microbiology that Staphylococcus aureus resistant to the pine cleaners also were found to be resistant to vancomycin and oxacillin.
Vancomycin is one of the strongest antibiotics, often used when other medications have resistance problems.
The researchers say a genetic mechanism may be responsible for both types of resistance. They note the test results add to a growing body of evidence suggesting common disinfectants can select for bacteria with reduced susceptibilities to antibiotics.
