Diet LINKED to Cancer Risks

Diet Linked to Cancer Risks, Says NCI’s Division of Cancer Prevention (2/23/04)

An increasing number of observations link diet with cancer risk: epidemiolgical and controlled preclinical experiments show that several dietary components may have a role in the cancer process.

While the risks of breast, prostate, colon, lung, and liver cancers may have been associated with dietary patterns, frequent inconsistencies are also noted, which may reflect the multi-factoral and complex nature of cancer and/or the specificity that individual dietary components have in modifying genetic pathways to health or disease.

NCI's Division of Cancer Prevention is working to advance the science of nutrition by capitalizing on recent advances in molecular biology by supporting research in areas related to dietary nutrients as modifiers of genetic pathways leading to cancer.

Collaborative, interdisciplinary research teams are tasked to resolving complex gene-nutrient relationships that affect cancer prevention.
