Imaging: From Fundamental Studies to Applied Science

From the abstract by Zaver M. Bhujwalla, Johns Hopkins Univ School of Med, Baltimore, MD “Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Cancer”.

“MR methods provide a vast array of capabilities to characterize function. These imaging techniques are easily translatable into the clinic, and are therefore compatible with ‘bench to bedside’ applications. Cancer cells have the remarkable ability to adapt, survive, and disseminate in physiological environments characterized by hypoxia and extracellular acidosis.

The hypoxic environment of solid tumors has also proven to be a major obstacle for successful radiation and chemotherapy of cancer for several decades…Altered choline metabolism is a prime example of a common feature of cancer revealed by MR spectroscopy, which can be exploited for treatment”.
