Infants/Toddlers 10X Risk of Cancer

CHILDREN AND CANCER

Infants and toddlers have 10 times the risk of developing cancer from exposure to toxins in the environment than adults do the EPA said this week as it issued draft guidelines for determining cancer risks to children posed by environmental pollutants.

To date, most research has focused on how exposure to cancer-causing agents in the environment affect adults. According to the EPA, what evidence exists of cancer risk from exposure to chemicals in early life is often less than unequivocal. The EPA has decided it's reasonable to believe children are more susceptible to carcinogens than adults

This could be for any number of reasons: cells divide more rapidly in youth, some cells don't have DNA repair mechanisms, the immune system isn't fully developed, hormone system works differently and finally genetic abnormalities acquired in youth may predispose someone to cancer later in life.
