Large-Core Needle Biopsy Safe and Effective in Pregnant and Postpartum Women ATLANTA, GA -- May 3, 2002 Large-core needle biopsy (LCNB) is a safe and accurate method of diagnosing breast lesions in pregnant and postpartum women, according to research presented here Thursday at the 102nd annual meeting of the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS). "Most breast lesions in pregnant or postpartum women are benign," said Stephanie Misono, of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, United States. "But cancers in this population tend to be advanced and aggressive." According to the researchers, 1 percent to 2 percent of all breast cancers are diagnosed during pregnancy. Stage to stage, the prognosis is similar for pregnant and nonpregnant patients, but pregnant women present with more advanced lesions, so determining the safety and efficacy of LCNB in this population is necessary.
