Announcement from Adelphia University, 1/04
"Women who partner with women sometimes feel that "mainstream" breast cancer support groups do not provide the environment to feely discuss their unique concerns.
Lesbians as cancer patients, survivors and partners are at greater risk for added stress because of societal biases, and frequently health care can be culturally insensitive.
Therefore, Adelphia University (Garden City, NY) is forming a new support group (1/04) bringing together lesbian women who are coping with breast cancer at any stage and their partners, in a safe environment to discuss issues pertinent to their lives. The group leader will be a certified social-worker and a self-disclosed lesbian. She has a personal understanding of the issues and the professional perspective necessary to facilitate the discussions.
Groups will meet in a confidential, safe setting at the offices of the Adelphia NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Services in Garden City, NY All services are free and confidential.
For questions or more information about joining this support group, call Sandi Kafenbaum, ACSW, group coordinator at (516)877-4314"
