Summary: In a study involving patients with type 2 diabetes and mild-to-moderate left ventricular dysfunction, supplementation with a mixture of amino acids, along with ACE inhibitor treatment, was found to benefit the left ventricular remodeling process.

In addition to standard ACE inhibitor treatment, patients were randomized to receive either supplementation with amino acids, or a placebo, for a period of 6 months. In the subjects who received amino acids, left ventricular end-diastolic index significantly reduced during the 6 months of amino acid supplementation (from 89 mL/m2 to 76 mL/m2), and left ventricular ejection fraction improved (from 0.46 to 0.52).

No such changes were found in the placebo group. The authors conclude, "These findings suggest that AA supplementation, together with ACE-inhibitor therapy, may have a beneficial effect on the LV remodeling process in patients with type 2 diabetes with mild-to-moderate LV dysfunction."
