Schagen SB, van Dam FS, Muller MJ, Boogerd W, Lindeboom J, Bruning PF,
"Cognitive deficits after postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for breast
carcinoma." Cancer 1999 Feb 1;85(3):640-50
Conclusion: "Breast carcinoma
patients treated with adjuvant CMF chemotherapy have a significantly higher
risk of late cognitive impairment than breast carcinoma patients not
treated with chemotherapy (OR 6.4).
This cognitive impairment is unaffected
by anxiety, depression, fatigue, and time since treatment, and not related
to the self-reported complaints of cognitive dysfunction."
Van Dam FSAM, Schagen SB, Muller M, et al. "Impairment of cognitive
function in women receiving adjuvant treatment for high-risk breast cancer:
high-dose versus standard-dose chemotherapy." J Natl Cancer Inst 1998; 90:
210-18.
Conclusion:
"High-dose chemotherapy appears to impair cognitive functioning more than
standard-dose chemotherapy. Central nervous system toxicity may be a
dose-limiting factor in high-dose chemotherapy regimens. "

Quality of Life 1 Year After Allogeneic or Autologous Stem-Cell
Transplantation: A Prospective Study." J Clin Oncol 17:706-718.
This
study looked at differing QOL aspects, and found that "cognitive function
was the only scale with a statistically significant difference."
KA Phillips, CB Brezden, M Abdolell, IF Tannock. "Cognitive Function in
Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Standard-Dose Adjuvant
Chemotherapy." Princess Margaret Hospital and University of
Toronto. Proceedings of ASCO 1999.
This study found that "Standard-dose
adjuvant CT for BC may adversely affect cognitive function. If these
findings are confirmed in future studies, it will be important to inform
patients of this effect, and to investigate the potential mechanisms involved."
