Screening for Pca - Pros/Cons

SCREENING FOR PCa – THE PROS AND CONS

DR. DAVID CRAWFORD, U. OF COLORADO

Dr. Crawford examind the case against PC screening and then examined the case in support. This debate is currently raging in the literature with the anti-screening group claiming that men are being declared as “having cancer” even though the amount of the tumor and its characteristics mark it as non-life threatening: “you will die with it, not of it!”

After presenting all the cons of the argument, he goes on to present the pros including most significant of all, the fall in mortality from prostate cancer that has been detected and dealt with early. Men are detected today with cancer that is not metastatic.

In pre-screening years men were often not detected until the disease had become metastatic. Because PCa is so often asymptomatic in its early stages, it is easy to miss it.

Because Dr. Crawford is a practicing urologist who sees and treats many men with PCa, he concludes that it is far better for a man to learn that he has the disease early enough to understand its nature (to the extent that is possible) and make rational decisions about he wishes to deal with in moving ahead.

Knowing one has the disease and defining its characteristics is quite different from deciding what, if any therapy, will be utilized in treating it.
