Short Summary of the White House Commission Meeting
The White House Commission held a meeting here in NYC and invited public testimony.
136 people spoke that day. Some were practitioners.
Three of the practitioners* are being censured by the New York State Board of Professional Medical Conduct. A law was passed in NYS that allows practitioners to use generally accepted complementary or alternative therapies. Yet this is being used against some doctors.
Even though they are supposed to be ‘judged’ by their peers, this is not happening. You can take a look on Monica Miller’s website (a NYS attorney)http://www.healthlobby.com/index.html which helps explain some of the problems facing CAM practitioners.
Some speakers represented consumer organizations like Consumers Health Freedom Coaltion,New York Natural Health Coalition,Green Party, Coalition for Natural Health,.
Others were from (trade)associations or alternative practitioners groups like New York College of Wholistic Health, NYS Relexology Association, International Somatic Movement Education & Therapy Association.
Many speakers were individuals who wanted to express their point of view. One fascinating aspect of the various presentations was that so many different topics were touched on. There are so many issues around CAM that few speakers duplicated others’ perspectives.
I spoke on the need for clinical trials of chemotherapy with vitamins (antioxidant use), chemotherapy alone, and vitamins/regimen alone. I have felt for a long time that such a study would offer valuable information to most patients and their healthcare providers.
This idea seemed well received by the panel. A full version of my talk will be placed here.
*Dr.Jennifer Daniels, solo practitioner in Syracuse, NY (I heard parts of her talk in which she stated that she had helped a patient with diabetes using non conventional modalities). *Dr. Charles E. Gant(I missed his presentation) and *Dr. Serafina Corsiello whose practice has been primarily with women.
