Silent Spring Inst: Indoor Environment

TOXICS AND HEALTH: Silent Spring Institute's new report;

The Silent Spring Institute, an innovative research organization dedicated to identifying the links between the environment and women's health, released a new report: Endocrine Disruptors in Indoor Air and Dust in Cape Cod, MA, Homes.

The study detected an average of 19 different endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in indoor air and 16 in house dust samples per household in 120 homes on Cape Cod.

EDCs are chemicals that can mimic or interfere with human hormones, such as estrogen, a hormone closely linked with the development of breast cancer. The chemicals found are used in plastics, detergents, furniture, carpets, electronic equipment, pesticides, and cosmetics.

They hope to use the results to identify ways to reduce health risks by reducing exposure, and to prioritize chemicals with high exposures for more rigorous health effects testing.
