On May 1st, Sri Lanka became the first country in the world to implement
a complete ban on genetically engineered foods. (Note: Many countries
have a moratorium on GE foods, but we believe Sri Lanka is the first
country with a complete ban.)
The United States criticized the Sri Lanka ban on Thursday and said this
would trigger a World Trade Organization (WTO) inquiry.
The Sri Lanka Health Minister announced the ban in early April on the
advice of the country's Food Advisory Committee.
Many countries use the "precautionary principle" in regulating
genetically engineered foods. The United States opposes the
precautionary principle as unscientific and arbitrary.
