UPDATE 7/07 It is now much more clearly established that foods - specifically fruits and vegetables make a difference in actual SURVIVAL.
Take note of the June 2007 (shown below) study from the Journal of Clinical Oncology, "Greater Survival After Breast Cancer in Physically Active
Women With High Vegetable-Fruit Intake Regardless
of Obesity".
UPDATE 5/01: A talk by David Heber, UCLA Center for Human Nutrition is featured on the Meeting Summaries page. Please take a look at his comments. He has information on SOY as well.
8/04 Ann Fonfa takes part in the AMAZON listserv which is composed of women interested in alternative therapies for breast cancer. Recently one member posted about the many studies on animal fats and breast cancer. Her complaint was that there were so few (if any) studies on the chemicals in our foods and our environment.
Ann has often thought about the many discussions of genetic mishaps that take place at medical/scientific meetings, genes gone wrong and wondered why no one suggested that perhaps this was happening due to environmental triggers.
Yes, advocates accept this but science has yet to show it. Take a look at: http://annieappleseedproject.org/enpolbca.html
11/02 A recent study of National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers showed that 14% offer nutritional counseling to cancer patients.
We do not fully understand what it is about a vegetable-based diet that promotes the metabolism and excretion of estrogen. But we know this is useful.
Vegetable cells contain substances called lignins which may be metabolized in the intestinal tract via friendly bacteria, into lignans. Lignans work to normalize estrogen activity. Equol, which is one of the lignans can promote liver metabolism of estrogen when absorbed into the blood of the intestinal tract.
Excretetory functions aid in removing excess estrogen from the body. Excessive estrogen has been indicated as a factor in development of breast cancer. We do not know all the details.
A plant-based diet has been said and shown (to some degree) to aid in the body's dealings with estrogen.
